Why should I hire a birth photographer?
Your birth - each birth - is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can put your wedding dress back on. You can’t redo your birth. As a professional birth photographer, I know how to work with funky lighting, am happy to rise and shine at 3 am, and know how to work with your birth team. I am also educated about physiological birth and know what to anticipate with each stage, which is crucial in capturing the monumental but quick moments of birth. Afterward, you’ll not only see how strong, powerful and loving you are - but you’ll also see how much you were loved and supported by your people. And you’ll hold in your hands the first time you locked eyes with your baby, the first family cuddle, and all of the emotions that came with bringing your baby into this world.

YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING

How do you do both photo + doula?
Photography is minimal through the majority of labor. This is when I will be offering doula support and taking a photo here and there. When baby is close to birth, a doula’s role becomes more hands-off (especially if you have a midwife or other birth support) and that’s when I’ll transfer into mostly photo mode! After baby is born, I’ll go back and forth between shooting the precious postpartum moments and also tending to your needs. It really is a great combo that flows seamlessly! Plus, when you hire me for both roles, that’s one less person in your birth space.

How much notice do you need when I go into labor? We’ll be in touch throughout your pregnancy, and I ask that you let me know when you have the first sign of labor so I can plan accordingly. Contractually, I will have 2 hours to arrive, however I often arrive to local births within 30-45 minutes. My arrival time depends on the distance and the time of day. I’ll get there as fast as I possibly can! As far as when I come - once you’re in active labor, I can come anytime. We’ll make a concrete plan well before your due date so you’ll know exactly when to notify me! If you go into labor before the on-call period begins (38 weeks), I will do everything in my power to arrive promptly to your birth!

Can I text you at 2 am?
Yep! You can reach out anytime during your pregnancy. Once the on-call window begins, I’ll have my phone on loud day and night. If you’re reaching out to tell me you’re ready for me to head over, you’ll need to call if I don’t respond to a text.

Will you drop anything & everything to be at my birth?
Just like you, I am a mama first. If it’s my child’s birthday party, recital, or one of the few events a year that I absolutely cannot miss, I will have my backup on-call for any day/hour that I will not be available. Rest assured that outside of extreme unforeseen circumstances, I will be the one on-call for 95%, if not 100%, of our contracted time. I LOVE attending births and truly feel called to this work - so much so that I will miss family gatherings, events with friends, etc. to be present for your birth without giving it a second thought!

What if you can’t make it?
In the unlikely event that I absolutely cannot make it to your birth, I’ll send my trusted backup doula-photographer. If you have an extremely fast/precipitous birth, I will still come to document those first postpartum moments. With precipitous births, “missing the birth” is a genuine part of your birth story and there is so much value in the hours that follow - the first latch, cutting the cord, measurements, family meeting baby, your partner and/or children holding baby for the first time, snuggling into bed, and so on! There’s still so much to photograph and so much support and encouragement to offer.

How does photography work when it’s dark?
I use professional photography equipment that handles low-light situations very well. For the sharpest, clearest images, it’s best if I use flash (don’t worry - it won’t be pointed directly at you!). When using flash, I’m very conscious about how many images I take to keep the flash use to a minimum. Most mamas don’t notice it at all! Of course, if you prefer I shoot without flash, I absolutely can. I only need a small amount of light, such as a lamp or some candles. Your images will still be beautiful and powerful! We will chat about this and make a plan to suit your preferences.

Do you do payment plans?
Customized interest-free payment plans are available. You can make payments at any pace you’d like, as long as your balance is paid by 38 weeks.

What’s your doula approach?
I believe in intuition-driven birth support. I am there to be a witness, to help your husband support you, and to meet your needs. I do not come into a birth space with a to-do list. I enter as a woman supporting another woman, tuning into what you need. This could range from simply being a witness who reminds you to sip water to providing continual hands-on support at your request. Doula support looks different for every family, but typically I am helping your husband support you, offering encouragement, meeting physical needs, preparing meals/snacks, helping with breastfeeding, drawing baths, and cleaning up after the birth.

I am not a midwife or a medical provider. I do not perform cervical checks, listen to heartbeats, or provide any type of medical care. I offer emotional support and meet physical needs as I tune into what is beneficial to you!

How many images will I receive? Will they be in color or black & white?
Each birth is different - in length, environment, and much more. You can expect to receive 75+ images. I will deliver every moment I believe will be meaningful to you without giving you tons and tons of duplicates. Your gallery will be beautifully curated to tell your whole story! You can expect mostly color images, with some black & white versions. Some images might only be black & white when the color version just isn’t working - usually due to funky shadows or harsh lighting, as is the nature of birth photography.

Will my photos be shared online?
Only photos you give me permission to share will be posted on my website/social media.

Ready to make things official?

Yay!! To officially book with me, I require a 50% non-refundable deposit and contract. The remaining balance is due at the start of the on-call period (38 weeks). The first 30 miles I travel round-trip for your birth are free, and standard mileage charges apply to any additional miles.
I’m so excited! It is an honor to be welcomed into your home to support you and document your birth!
